Course Description

Study dance criticism and dance writing as an art form. View dance performances, both live and recorded, through a critical lens. Explore methodologies for writing about dance performance across genres, including classical and world dance traditions. Provide written dance reviews, and a comparative analysis between a contemporary and historical performance of a tradition work of your choice. In addition, analyze dance reviews by 20th and 21st Century dance critics, and discuss their approach to dance criticism.

Learning Outcomes:

Select, review and analyze and discuss critical readings about dance, from both historical and contemporary perspectives.

Review, analyze and compare dance writing by prominent dance critics, and develop a written analysis and critique of one critic’s approach to dance writing and criticism.

Review and provide written critiques of dance performances in diverse genres, both live and recorded. This should include modern, classical ballet, another classical tradition (such as classical Indian or Southeast Asian dance) and world dance traditions. Write a comparative analysis between a contemporary and historical performance of a classic work.
